Description
Looking a bit like the Cowardly Lion are the ‘masks’ which make up part of the Cento Fontane (Hundred Fountains) at the Villa d’Este in Tivoli Italy. The Cento Fontane occupies the wall of a long walkway at the Villa d’Este and there are actually nearly three hundred spouts fed by three parallel canals, one above the other, with a row of these masks as the lower row. While the Cento Fontane can be considered a single fountain in design, there probably are at least a hundred other fountains at the Villa d’Este! The fountains were constructed between 1566 and 1577. The Villa d'Este is a 16th-century villa in Tivoli, near Rome, famous for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden and especially for its profusion of fountains. It is now an Italian state museum, and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
